Yesterday we had the first sneak peek of our little bambino. Poor C had to drink a litre of water (but we think she had more than that) about an hour before the ultrasound. It is times like this when having a timely technician can make all the difference in the world. The waiting area was empty but there were delays and by the time she was called into the appointment she did a little cross-legged jig all the way to the procedure room. Ugh!
Once everything was set up for the procedure and bebe's cameo shots were taken for Dr. Donna, S was brought into the room for the fun stuff. We were able to see bebe's little heart ticking away in there and saw he/she measures just under 1.77cm from crown to rump. Both of us were relieved and thrilled to see the little ticker beating away on that monotone screen, and left with our first photos in long ribbon that looked like an oversized strip of photos you'd get out of a quickie photo booth. According to the due date that Dr. Donna gave us (March 4, 2007), the measurements were perfectly on schedule - to the day.
To celebrate, we had some pupusas at a little restaurant nearby. It appears that the bebe will like pupusas when s/he arrives as this is one of the things that has made C's tummy very happy afterwards!

Into the 9th week already!
In the grand scheme of things, 40 weeks is really not that long. It feels like yesterday when we first found out C was pregnant. That said, it has been quite a journey even over the past 4 weeks. It's amazing that you consider every little symptom more carefully now - wondering if there are enough or not enough symptoms at any given moment.
Last week we met a midwife. It was a good, but wasted appointment because she's moving out of the city, so we were reassigned and they didn't have time to call us to reschedule the appointment with this other woman. Let me tell you, I could not believe how difficult it is to even get a midwife. Apparently, over 30 people who want to have a midwife for their pregnancy get turned away every month. It's pretty unbelievable. I suppose we're quite lucky in the sense that our due date is estimated to be in early March and we called very early on (at about 5 weeks gestation). We have not yet committed to taking this approach, but it's something we're exploring right now.
At any rate, we meet the midwife that is assigned to us from this clinic, as well as another midwife from another clinic (closer to our home) early next week. We'll see how things go and make a decision soon!

One set of parents told!
We went to visit my family in Ottawa over the weekend. We had discussed this in advance and thought since we probably wouldn't be down again over the summer we would tell my dad and his wife about being pregnant. It's was funny how difficult it was to bring up the subject. It just never seemed like the right moment. When we arrived on the friday we were greeted with a story about how my dad's wife had just had a terrible day with one of her sons. I don't know the whole story, but her son's girlfriend called to say she had big news. Everyone was apparently terrified that she was calling to say she was pregnant. (they are way too young). So, that didn't seem like the right moment for us to make our big announcement.
Saturday we got up and washed the cars out front. We always do this when we go to my dad's house. I was pretty tired and a bit worried because we were supposed to play tennis in the afternoon. Since becoming pregnant my energy level has decreased substantially.
Over lunch S kept looking at me telling me with her eyes to just say it. Well, I couldn't find a good way. When lunch was done S walks over to my dad's wife and casually mentions in french that she hopes the 5th person at the table enjoyed the lunch. She got a strange look in response and then S glances over at me and smiles. My dad's wife got it pretty quickly, but my dad was left in the dark. I then piped in with a big "We're going to have a baby. I'm pregnant!". No mincing words with me. I will never forget the look on my dad's face. He was stunned, no maybe shocked is a better word. I guess he had never thought that I would have children. I think the first words out of his mouth were something like "can you still play tennis this afternoon?". It was classic.
After the initial shock wore off we had a good time with it. I was really surprised how excited everyone was. We did go and play tennis that afternoon, but I took it easy. I was really happy to find out that I can still play pretty well considering I only play once or twice a year.
Over dinner all anyone could talk about was the pregnancy. My dad started asking random questions about whether I was taking folic acid etc., so that's when I knew everything was okay. After dinner was over my dad came running up from the basement with a small cradle that I used to use. The family then spent the next half an hour trying to squeeze it into our new car - much to the dismay of S and myself. It didn't end up fitting, but we all had a good laugh when we turned around and found my father sitting in it in the driveway. We managed to get a couple of pictures of such an out of character thing for him to be doing.
On Sunday we packed up the car and headed home. I think both S and myself realized that this is why people don't tell their families or friends until they are past the 12 week safety mark. Everyone is so excited that it would be devastating if something were to happen.
Quite an eventful weekend.

In to see Dr. Donna
Yesterday we had our first appointment to confirm the pregnancy. It was a good appointment - we think that we took our physician by surprise as we had already been in to one fertility clinic and didn't care much for -that- experience, and were placed on a waiting list for another. Who knew that a month later we'd be sitting in her office with this news. It's tough to not be overly excited about being pregnant - especially when 15% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage before 12 weeks. We're trying not to think too much about that though - and focus on enjoying the moments we have and do as much as possible to foster good development of our baby. If there's a miscarriage - as tough as that would be... there's probably a darned good reason.
The next appointment will be on July 17th. We'll know better then how things are progressing. So far C is feeling not too bad. No morning sickness or anything - which is nice. It could kick in at any time though. We're going to visit C's family this weekend - which will be interesting. We're not ready to tell anyone yet, but C's Dad loves to get a nice cold beer ready for our arrival, and pick out a few bottles of wine to enjoy with dinners over the weekend. For now, we'll tell them we're trying to get pregnant...wonder if we can actually keep it under wraps though. C's Dad is a physician and step-mother is a nurse...not sure what we'll do if they ask us point-blank.

5 weeks 3 days - oooh a nap sounds good
A short week later and napping rather regularly sounds very good. C's energy level is not what it used to be - growing a little one inside takes much more out of you than you'd expect, even this early on.
We were up around 7am. S has a list of things as long as her arm to do around the house over the next 9 months and there's no better time to start them than the present. This weekend we finished sanding the drywall in the kitchen and this morning we spent hours cleaning up the seemingly infinite layer of dust on top of everything. At least it's done!
